Courier-Journal #fail: What’s a 5k marathon [Anthem 5k]?

Dear Courier-Journal.  5k is a distance.  If you’re unfamiliar, it’s 5 kilometers, which is roughly 3.1 miles.

Marathon also refers to a distance.  At present, that distance is 26 miles, 385 yards or 42.195 kilometers.

In history, the distance has been as short as 24.85 miles.  However, it has never been remotely close to 5k.  The last finisher of the Anthem 5k finished 30 minutes sooner than the world record marathon time.

I do not expect the average person to understand the distinction; however, in order to report on a basketball game, you wouldn’t allow the terms “extra innings” and “overtime” to be confused.  ”Home runs” vs. “Touchdowns?”

  • Progressive Long Run (16 miles) while watching the game #twit2fit #running One of the things that's great about football season is that you can easily do a long run on the treadmill while watching the game.  I did mine today at home on my Sole F80 at a 1% incline (watching the UofL-UK game). I've been doing my long runs at......
  • Trying to actually run easy. Very nice weather this morning. 65'F outside, partly cloudy, and not too humid. Rain came in about an hour before my run.I tried to run "easy" based on my 5k time. According to Vdot Calculator and Training Paces based on a 21:54 5k (using Daniels' Running Formula, 2nd edition), that......
  • The Iroquois hill run and an 8-week streak #twit2fit I ran the full hill on Iroquois park on Friday afternoon:  Sunny and mid-80s.  I had a sluggish start, but enjoyed being able to run in the near-summer temperatures after missing out on running most of last summer. The "real uphill" to the top never seems to give me......
  • Exit the monkey It's been a roller coaster year for my running. 8 PRs this year, including back-to-back 10 miler PRs (-10 minutes each time) and a PR by 55 minutes (3:39) at Flying Pig. Then came a rough showing (4:42) at the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon, followed by tendonitis and an SI joint injury.......
  • Ran for the first time. 2.16 mi in 18:18 #twit2fit I intended to go outside to walk 2 miles, despite my back being pretty tight still.  Leaving the gym, I had to decide whether I wanted to bring my iPod Classic (arm band) and phone with me (no pockets).  Doing so would have guaranteed that I wouldn't have run.  However,......
